GO DEEPER

The ultimate expression of God’s surprising generosity is the gift of his Son Jesus Christ, whose birth we are celebrating during this Christmas season. When we truly experience the generosity of Jesus Christ in our own lives, it produces in us a heart of generosity. How is your heart when it comes to generosity?

Read Luke 15:11-32.

Both the older son in Luke 15 and the workers who were hired first in Matthew 20 witnessed the demonstration of God’s generosity to those who did not deserve it. How did the older son and the workers who were hired first respond to the demonstration of God’s generosity to the undeserving (see Luke 15:28-30; Matthew 20:11-12,15b)? In what ways is your response similar to theirs as you see others receive generous blessings from the Lord? Is there anything you need to confess as you examine your response? Anger? Envy? Entitlement?

Read Luke 2:15-20; 25-31; 36-38; Matthew 2:9-11.

The shepherds, Simeon, Anna and the Magi experienced the arrival of Jesus, the One who is the ultimate expression of God’s surprising generosity to all people. How would you describe their response? What was their attitude? What did they do? How does their response challenge and instruct you?

Action item: List ways you are experiencing the generosity of God through His Son Jesus Christ. Start the list today and add to it daily throughout the Advent season. If you have difficulty thinking of ways He is generous toward you, read the following: Psalm 103; Romans 8; Ephesians 1-2; Colossians 1; Hebrews 2:14-17; 4:14-5:3; 1 Peter 2:9-10.
