The greatest gift that could ever be given is a gift that we celebrate on Christmas day. It is the gift of the kingdom of heaven coming here. It is the gift of Immanuel, God with us. It is the gift of salvation. Yet, Christmas can often be dominated by the consumption of “stuff.”

Read Matthew 6:19-21.

What is Christmas really about for you? Many of us have a programmed answer to that question. We know that the answer is “Jesus.” In fact, we want to “put the Christ back in Christmas” now more than ever (and we want to put Christ back on the store windows and on Starbucks cups). So, let’s ask the question one more time: What is Christmas really about for you? Does your checkbook or credit card statement say you treasure Jesus or stuff during December?

Read Matthew 2:1-12.

The magi are a familiar part of the Christmas story. Did you notice what happened in verse 11? They brought treasure to the Treasure. The brought gifts to the Gift. They came with gold, frankincense and myrrh, but that isn’t the gift that mattered most. The gift that mattered most was given right before that. “They fell down and worshiped him” (ESV). The best gift you can give the Lord is worship during this Advent season. If you have kids in your home, make sure you are using the “Advent Guide” to help lead your family in worship.
